Fulfilled by TikTok or shipping it yourself?

Pick Fulfilled by TikTok when fast dispatch and having TikTok handle delivery complaints matter more to you than keeping cash out of inbound stock. Ship yourself, through Seller Shipping or TikTok Shipping, when you need control over inventory, packaging or carriers and can meet the handling times on your own.

Put your shipping cost into the fee and profit calculator

US TikTok Shop gives you three fulfillment paths, not two

Sellers usually frame this as FBT against doing it yourself. TikTok's logistics overview lists three options, and the middle one is the one most guides skip.

  • Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT). You send stock to TikTok-operated warehouses, and TikTok stores it, packs each order and handles last-mile delivery. TikTok's FBT page calls it its in-house service for storage, packing and shipping.
  • TikTok Shipping. Stock stays in your own warehouse or your 3PL's. You print labels TikTok provides, and TikTok assigns the carrier.
  • Seller Shipping. Stock stays with you or your 3PL, you choose the carrier, and you enter tracking yourself.

When sellers say self-fulfillment they mean one of the last two. Both keep inventory under your roof. They differ in who owns the label and the carrier relationship, and that decides who owns the delivery problems.

None of the three changes the platform's cut. The referral fee, 6% on most US categories, is charged on every order however it ships. The TikTok Shop referral and commission fees guide explains that part.

Support and refunds follow the path you choose

On Seller Shipping, TikTok's overview is blunt: the seller is fully responsible for all logistics inquiries and shopper complaints. A lost parcel or a late delivery is your ticket to answer. On FBT and TikTok Shipping, TikTok's customer service takes the last-mile logistics questions.

Compensation splits the same way. TikTok's fulfillment comparison marks Seller Shipping as not eligible for compensation for logistics issues, so a carrier's mistake comes out of your margin.

Your product rating is affected too. On FBT and TikTok Shipping, a review that only complains about delivery can be flagged "Platform Issue" and kept out of your product rating and negative review rate, according to TikTok's review rules. On Seller Shipping, that one-star review for a slow carrier counts against the listing.

FBT has its own exposure. Seller forum threads we read describe disputes over units counted on arrival at the warehouse, and cash sitting in stock that has not sold yet. Those are reports from individual sellers, so plan for them without assuming they will happen to you.

What FBT costs compared with your shipping line

FBT charges per unit. TikTok's FBT fee page says that fee covers pick, pack, packaging and last-mile delivery to the shopper. Storage is free for the first 60 days, after which a daily fee per cubic foot applies.

The rate table TikTok publishes shows the scale: a single unit of 4 oz or less was listed at $4.28. Heavier tiers cost more, and TikTok changes the table on dates it announces, so read the current tier for your product weight there.

When you ship yourself, the same job is split into a label, a box, filler and the time to pack. In the calculator, all of that goes into Your shipping and packing cost. If the customer pays for shipping, enter it under Shipping the customer pays too, because the referral fee is charged on that amount as well.

Here is how to compare a light item. Look up its FBT tier and enter that figure as your shipping and packing cost. Then run the order again with what your label and packaging really cost. The scenario with the higher net profit is your answer for that SKU, before storage. If the item usually takes more than 60 days to sell through, add storage on top of the FBT figure.

When shipping yourself still wins

Start with size. TikTok's logistics overview limits FBT products to 26 × 26 × 26 inches and under 50 lb, while the FBT rate card carries heavier, larger tiers. Because the two pages disagree, confirm in Seller Center whether your exact product qualifies before you plan around it.

Then look at how fast it sells. A bulky item that sits for months runs past the free storage window, and the daily fee keeps adding up while it waits for a buyer.

Finally, consider what you already have. A brand that runs its own warehouse, or works with a 3PL that tracks well, gains less from FBT. Seller Shipping requires a shipping fee template before you list, and TikTok holds you fully responsible for delivery performance and tracking accuracy. If your 3PL already meets those standards, moving stock into a second warehouse only adds an inbound step and the receiving risk that comes with it.

When FBT is worth testing

Small, light products that sell steadily are the natural fit. They sit in the lowest fee tiers and leave the warehouse well inside the free storage period.

FBT also takes dispatch off your desk. TikTok sets a dispatch SLA of 1 business day for FBT orders, which matters when a creator video brings in more orders than you can pack in a day.

And it moves delivery complaints to TikTok's support team. For a small team that answers every ticket itself, that can be worth more than the difference in fees.

The February 2026 shipping scare is over for now

Early in 2026 TikTok told US sellers it would phase out independent shipping. After seller backlash it reversed the plan, and Modern Retail reported TikTok's message that Seller Shipping remains unchanged and the deadlines it had shared would not go into effect.

So there is no forced move to make. Decide on economics. Whether your own account keeps Seller Shipping depends on meeting TikTok's account rules, which you can see in Seller Center.

UK and EU shops have their own fulfillment rules, which this guide does not cover.

Decision checklist

  • Velocity: will each unit sell within the 60 days of free storage?
  • Weight and size: does Seller Center accept the product for FBT, and which fee tier is it in?
  • Support time: can you answer every delivery complaint yourself, at your own cost?
  • Cash: can you pay for stock that sits in TikTok's warehouse before it sells?
  • Existing setup: do you already have a 3PL that uploads accurate tracking on time?

My take: start with TikTok Shipping if you already pack orders well, because you keep your stock and still get TikTok's support on delivery problems. Move a SKU to FBT only when the calculator shows it earns more there.

FBT and self-fulfillment questions

Is Fulfilled by TikTok cheaper than shipping orders myself?
It depends on the weight of the item and how long it sits in the warehouse. Compare the per-unit FBT fee for your weight tier with what a label plus packaging costs you today.
Can US sellers still ship their own TikTok Shop orders?
Yes. TikTok withdrew the planned deadlines in February 2026, and eligible sellers who follow its account rules can keep using Seller Shipping.
Does FBT change the TikTok Shop referral fee?
No. The referral fee is a separate charge on every order, whichever way it ships.
What is the difference between TikTok Shipping and Seller Shipping?
Both ship from your own stock. TikTok Shipping uses labels TikTok provides and TikTok assigns the carrier. Seller Shipping uses your own carrier and tracking.
